5 Ways to Enjoy a Gluten-Free Stroopwafel

This post features five ways to enjoy a gluten-free stroopwafel and is sponsored by Sweet Amsterdam, a company that makes authentic gluten-free stroopwafels. This post contains affiliate links. Please see my disclosures.

2023 UPDATE: Sweet Amsterdam may be out of business, and readers tell me they cannot find the brand’s once-popular stroopwafels. The only other gluten-free brand of stroopwafels I know is the Dutch Waffle Company. Be careful when ordering from Dutch Waffle Company, as not all of its products are gluten-free.

The latest food trend sweeping the gluten-free nation is stroopwafels.

Stroopwafels are layered Dutch waffle cookies that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They usually contain a sweet filling, such as caramel, sandwiched between the two crispy layers.

While most stroopwafels are full of gluten, I will share how you can get your hands on gluten-free stroopwafels. Yes, even if you’ve said “goodbye” to gluten long ago, you can still enjoy this tasty treat.

Of course you could make your own gluten-free stroopwafels at home if you had the right recipe, the right equipment, and the time; the truth is, I find it easier to buy them pre-packaged so they’re always available for on-demand snacking.

The leader of the gluten-free stroopwafels movement is a company called Sweet Amsterdam.

The company’s popular stroopwafels offer European textures in a variety of tasty flavors, including:

  • Caramel Cinnamon
  • Chocolate Banana
  • Lemon Bar
  • Speculaas Spice (Speculaas is a spice made from cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves, and ginger)

Sweet Amsterdam’s stroopwafels are all gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, kosher, organic and contain only five grams of sugar each.

While stroopwafels are popular in the Netherlands, they are quickly becoming a well-known treat in the U.S. and throughout the world too. Today I want to share with you a few ways you can enjoy stroopwafels at home as a fun gluten-free snack, breakfast or treat.

How to Eat a Stroopwafel

You can eat a stroopwafel however you like. Dive right in. You can’t go wrong.

But if you’re looking to jazz up the experience, allow me to show you five simple ways to enjoy this Dutch treat.

Idea #1: The OG Stroopwafel

Many people enjoy their stroopwafel warmed over a cup of coffee, tea or hot cocoa, which is the way it is enjoyed in Europe and the Netherlands.

Simply place the stroopwafel on top of a mug filled with a hot beverage of choice and let the stroopwafel sit for 30-60 seconds before eating.

The steam from the beverage will heat up the stroopwafel and make it taste amazing. And, of course, you could also dip the stroopwafel in the beverage for extra yumminess.

Idea #2: The PB Berry Bunch Stroopwafel

I’m loving the Caramel Cinnamon stroopwafel covered with gooey peanut butter and fresh berries, especially this time of year when berries are their sweetest. If you want to enjoy this treat in the winter, simply top the stroopwafel with frozen berries or cinnamon-covered chopped apples. You can’t go wrong!

Idea #3: The Coconut Jam Stroopwafel

If you love jam, you’ll love smearing apricot jam (or jam of choice) over a Lemon Bar stroopwafel and then sprinkling it with healthy coconut shreds. It’s almost too pretty to eat!

Idea #4: The Chocolate Strawberry Stroopwafel

The Caramel Cinnamon stroopwafel tastes amazing when coated with a chocolate hazelnut spread and plenty of fresh strawberries. Is it dessert or a fun snack? Trick question. It’s both!

Idea #5: The Banana-Chip Stroopwafel

Lemon Bar stroopwafels also taste amazing topped with mashed bananas and chocolate chips. So many sweet flavors and wonderful textures to make your taste buds sing.

Where to Buy Stroopwafels

The best place to buy stroopwafels is on the Sweet Amsterdam website or on Amazon. Stock up and enjoy them with your morning coffee or as a quick afternoon pick-me-up.

I wish I could’ve tried them, they sound so good! Especially the lemon bar one. But I did find a bunch of other gluten free stroopwafel brands here: gluten.guide/post/gf-stroopwafels/
