Hereโs this weekโs question:
Dear Miss GF Manners,
How do I respond to people who think eating gluten-free is just a lifestyle choice or a fad diet? For me, itโs not optional; itโs the difference between feeling well and dealing with serious gut issues.
Sincerely,
Gluten-Free is Not a Trend
Dear Gluten-Free is Not a Trend,
Ah yesโฆ the โIsnโt that just a fad diet?โ conversation. We’ve all been there (cue the eye roll).
Letโs clear something up right away. For many of us, gluten-free is not a preference, a trend, or something weโre doing for fun. Itโs a medical necessity. The alternative isnโt just a little discomfort. Itโs real symptoms, real consequences, and for those with celiac disease, actual damage to the body.
That said, Miss GF Manners doesnโt believe you need to launch into a full medical lecture every time someone makes an offhand comment. Nor do you have to justify the way you live.
Instead, a simple, calm response often does the trick:
“This isnโt a choice for me. I have to eat this way to stay healthy.”
You can leave it there. You donโt owe anyone your full medical history.

Butโฆ if someone is genuinely curious or open to learning, this can absolutely be an educational opportunity.
You can share a little more. Help them understand what gluten does to your body. Explain why cross-contact matters. Give them a glimpse into what living gluten-free actually looks like day to day.
Thatโs how awareness grows. Thatโs how the next gluten-free person they meet might have an easier experience.
The key is reading the room.
๐ If someone is dismissive, you donโt need to prove anything.
โ If someone is open, you can choose to educate.
Either way, youโre in control of the conversation.
The goal is to be clear, confident, and grounded in what you know to be true for your body.
And over time, the more we all show up that way, the more people begin to understand that gluten-free isnโt a fad diet or trend. For many of us, itโs simply how we stay healthy and live well.
With care,
Miss GF Manners
