We all heard the exciting news earlier this year that the Girl Scouts would be introducing two new gluten-free Girl Scout cookies to its line up. I was excited at first, because it’s always fun to try new gluten-free products, but my excitement was quickly tempered when I learned that the Denver market would only have access to the toffee-tastic variety. I was hoping we could also sample the Trios (described as chocolate chips nestled in a gluten-free peanut butter oatmeal cookie) – now those sound fantastic. But like I said, here in Denver, we only had the toffee-tastic gluten-free variety for sale.
Unfortunately I don’t like toffee. Not one bit. I decided I wasn’t going to buy any. It would not be worth the calories, right?
Then, at dinner the other night, my mother-in-law pulls out a box of toffee-tastic cookies she bought for me! When you’re gluten-free, and your family and friends see interesting gluten-free products, they tend to buy it for you. It’s just the way it goes.
I expressed my gratitude for her gesture and let her know that I disliked toffee. That said, because she bought them for me, it would be rude not to try them, right? I decided to give them a chance – this way I could report back to all of you here at the Good For You Gluten Free blog.
They look pretty, and upon first bite, crumbs came tumbling down, landing everywhere! This cookie sure is crisp and flakey! Now mind you, I don’t like toffee, but I really didn’t taste much toffee flavor. This seemed to me to taste more like a crisp butter cookie. I could feel the texture of crispy bits of toffee, but the taste of toffee was not overwhelming at all. In fact, it was a faint flavor. I tasted only the sweetness of a butter cookie to be honest.
I didn’t mind the cookie as much as I thought I would. It’s not one I would go out of my way to eat though. I much prefer homemade, soft-baked cookies way more than crispy, processed cookies. But if you’re gluten-free, and a diehard Girl Scout cookie lover, then you’re going to love that the Girl Scouts included your diet considerations in its cookie line up this year.
So I ask all of my GFYGF readers out there – what do you think of the new gluten-free Girl Scout cookies? I’m dying to know what you all think of the Trios I was denied, and what you thought of toffee-tastic too?
