I didn’t quite realize until I got there that Native Foods Cafe is a vegan restaurant! What a wonderful treat – and a restaurant that certainly knows how to accommodate special food requests. We just welcomed a few Native Food Cafes in Colorado, and I see from the restaurant’s website that they are already being enjoyed by residents in California, Oregon, Illinois, and Washington DC.
I noticed the menu was ripe with fresh salads, wraps, and “earth bowls.” For those of us with special dietary requests, you can ask for a nut allergy, soy allergy, or wheat/gluten free menu. The restaurant fully discloses its ingredients online.
There were two items on the menu that felt “safe” enough to eat, were marked “GF,” and looked yummy too. The first was the Ensalada Azteca (self-described as their “best” salad – it includes fresh avocado, jicama and cucumber salsa, quinoa, romaine, raisins, toasted pumpkin seeds and cilantro served with a mango lime vinaigrette). The second was the Moroccan Earth Bowl. Since I’ve never had an Earth Bowl before, I decided to try it. I’ll come back for the salad next week!
The Moroccan Earth Bowl includes Moroccan marinated tofu with grilled veggies, quinoa, raisins and toasted almonds. Here is a photo of it right before I dived in – so pretty!
When I told the server I had Celiac, she knew exactly what to do. She alerted the kitchen as I placed my order, and even followed up with me to let me know they would be super careful with my dish. Finally, a restaurant that gets it – kudos Native Foods Cafe!
The ingredients tasted fresh, very fresh. The veggies were roasted to perfection and the quinoa was delicious and nutty. I asked for the dressing on the side – I added it later – it’s a zesty vinaigrette of sorts that I found to be really flavorful. Despite no meat, this dish was filling and I couldn’t even eat it all to be honest. There is so much food here!
The only thing that was difficult was my 7-year old daughter. She ordered chicken nuggets off the kids menu – but of course they’re vegan chicken nuggets and she could taste the difference. It was a great opportunity for her to try something different (and learn about vegan eating) and I’m proud of her for eating a bit of her meal. I’m not sure I would take her back, but I promise you, I’ll definitely be back. I already signed up as a rewards member and got a BOGO offer over email the other day!
Disclosure: I visited the Native Foods Cafe in Denver, Co off Colorado Blvd near University Hills. I was not compensated for my visit. All opinions are my own.
