In the spirit of this year’s “Big Dance,” NCAA Basketball Tournament, I want to share with you a Cinderella story in the hot dog industry. It’s a “true story” about a both a David and a Goliath hot dog brand.
Before I tell you about the Cinderella story, I must disclose that a representative from Sprouts Farmers Markets contacted me. He asked me to share my thoughts about a new organic hot dog and sausage brand they are featuring in their grocery stores called True Story Foods. Because I shop at Sprouts often and love the gluten-free, organic and local foods selection, I was definitely excited to take on this project.
Sprouts sent me an awesome loot of True Food organic hot dogs and sausages, including Apple & Wildflower Honey Chicken Sausage, Sriracha Jalapeno Chicken Sausage, Uncured Beef Hot Dogs, and Uncured Chicken Hot Dogs. All products are gluten-free, contain no added MSG, no nitrates or nitrates added, and the animal products used were raised without antibiotics or added hormones ever.
So why is True Story a March Madness Cinderella story? The answer is because in a head-to-head battle between True Story (David) and one of the leading hot dog brands (Goliath), made by one of the world’s largest food producers, True Story pulls off the bracket-breaking upset!
In one [food] court, a leading hot dog brand is made from mechanically separated chicken, mechanically separated turkey, water, pork, corn syrup, modified cornstarch, salt, sodium phosphates, sodium diacetate, sodium benzoate, sodium ascorbate, flavor, and sodium nitrite.
This hot dog brand most likely uses factory-farmed animals to make its meat mixture, and of course SAD ingredients like corn syrup, cornstarch, nitrates, chemicals and preservatives.
In the other [food] court, True Story’s all-beef hot dogs, for example, are made from organic beef, water, organic spices, organic evaporated cane sugar, organic onion powder, sea salt, organic paprika, organic garlic powder, sodium lactate, celery powder and natural flavors.
Also, True Story animals are able to “root, roam, and rummage, and are never caged, crated, or inhumanely confined,” according to the company’s website. Animals raised on True Story farms are fed an all-vegetarian diet, given zero antibiotics, growth enhancers, or added hormones. True Story farmers practice integrated, holistic farming and they believe in good land stewardship.
Enough about the ingredients… let’s talk taste!
Due to a March snowstorm here in Denver, I wasn’t able to grill these dogs on my outdoor grill. Not to worry, I simply busted out the indoor grill pan, cooked the dogs and sausages a few minutes on each side, and voila, they were ready to go!
I served the gluten-free hot dogs and sausages on Udi’s gluten-free hot dog buns, alongside two varieties of Veggie Fries (Kale, Tuscan Herbs & Potatoes and Chickpeas, Red Peppers & Potatoes), and topped with my homemade farm-fresh jicama-mango salsa (find my recipe below). I bought everything I needed for my March Madness supper at Sprouts!
I assembled the dogs just in time for the Wichita State vs. Arizona game on Thursday night. I made a few extra dogs and sausages for us to sample first, which enabled us to each choose our favorite. My daughter picked the beef hot dog and my son picked the chicken hot dog. My husband I both liked the sausages the best – I picked the Sriracha Jalapeno Chicken (I like it spicey!) and my husband picked the Apple & Wildflower Honey Chicken Sausage, although we honestly loved both! My kids were giddy eating these dogs – not only was their gluten-free, healthy mama allowing them to eat hot dogs, but I was serving hot dogs up for dinner! The kids loved them and we all had happy, full bellies that night – true story!
In my opinion, True Story doesn’t just beat the leading hot dog brand when it comes to quality ingredients and sustainable farming and business practices, but also it beats the leading hot dog brand in taste! (In full disclosure, I wouldn’t touch the leading hot dog brand with a 10-foot pole, more or less feed it to my family.) I not only scarfed down these awesome True Story hot dogs and sausages, but also I had no qualms about feeding them to my family.
The results of this hot dog match up couldn’t be more crystal clear. True Story wins the hot dog championship in the True [Cinderella] Story of the year!
